Shu-Fen am\u00e9nage \u00e0 Taipei avec ses deux filles, I-Ann jeune adulte et I-Jing, 10ans. Elle vit s\u00e9par\u00e9 de son mari. Elle compte ouvrir un restaurant de rue au march\u00e9 nocturne de la ville. Les loyers sont \u00e9lev\u00e9s et elle peine \u00e0 joindre les deux bouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
La petite I-Jing, gauch\u00e8re, est traumatis\u00e9e par tout ce qu\u2019elle fait avec sa main gauche depuis que son grand-p\u00e8re cherche \u00e0 la convertir en droiti\u00e8re. La jeune I-Ann gagne sa vie comme h\u00f4tesse vendeuse sous la surveillance ambigu\u00eb de son patron tandis que Shu doit conjuguer le pr\u00e9sent avec ses engagements d\u2019ancienne \u00e9pouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Le film traite de La condition f\u00e9minine sous de multiples formes, sur trois g\u00e9n\u00e9rations dans un pays o\u00f9 les apparences doivent \u00eatre conformes aux attentes sociales et o\u00f9 il est exclu de perdre la face. Trois portraits f\u00e9minins o\u00f9 la droiture de l\u2019adulte r\u00e9pond \u00e0 la r\u00e9bellion de sortie de l\u2019adolescente et \u00e0 l\u2019insouciance de la jeune enfance. Les portraits sont attendrissants et joliment articul\u00e9s entre eux. Les masques tombent et les relations se normalisent, enfin. J\u2019ai pass\u00e9 un tr\u00e8s bon moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
