En 1858, la jeune gouvernante excentrique Winifred Notty arrive au manoir gothique isol\u00e9 d\u2019Ensor House pour entrer au service de la famille Pounds et de leurs deux enfants. Accueillie froidement mais anim\u00e9e d\u2019une grande ambition, elle tra\u00eene derri\u00e8re elle une r\u00e9putation inqui\u00e9tante n\u00e9e de ses pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes exp\u00e9riences. Le jardinier du manoir d\u00e9couvre son pass\u00e9 trouble et la fait chanter, mena\u00e7ant de tout r\u00e9v\u00e9ler \u00e0 ses employeurs si elle ne lui verse pas une importante somme d\u2019argent. Charg\u00e9e de l\u2019\u00e9ducation des enfants, Winifred affiche rapidement des m\u00e9thodes et des mani\u00e8res particuli\u00e8rement d\u00e9routantes. Pendant ce temps, Miss Lamb, la nourrice terroris\u00e9e par les rumeurs d\u2019une myst\u00e9rieuse goule r\u00f4dant dans le ch\u00e2teau, cherche refuge aupr\u00e8s d\u2019elle. Alors que Winifred semble peu \u00e0 peu s\u2019int\u00e9grer, plusieurs domestiques disparaissent inexplicablement et les propri\u00e9taires commencent \u00e0 douter de leur nouvelle gouvernante. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Entre humour noir, sens de la d\u00e9rision et esth\u00e9tique victorienne soign\u00e9e, le film s\u00e9duit aussi par ses beaux costumes et une mise en sc\u00e8ne \u00e9l\u00e9gante, s\u2019\u00e9loignant ainsi des codes visuels habituels des s\u00e9ries B du genre. Les amateurs de film d\u2019horreur devraient y trouver leur compte. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
